Action Regarding Nuclear Waste Disposal

The Japanese government is planning to improve its current efforts in selecting the last site for nuclear waste disposal.

This is after failing to find a willing and open host community in the span of over a decade.

However, the said long-stalled process is going to have less chances of being pushed through, unless the questions and doubts about nuclear power are answered.

These include the ones that the nuclear disaster which took place in Fukushima in 2011 have highlighted.

Plan Improvements

In the year 2000, the Japanese government agreed to vitrify and bury the nuclear waste produced, after the fuel used in nuclear plants is reprocessed, underground deeper than 300 meters.

After two years, the government began to solicit the municipalities in the entire country which would want to volunteer and host the disposal site for the high-level radioactive waste.

They offered huge subsidies to get preliminary research in return.

In 2007, one of the towns of the Kochi Prefecture tried to come forward. But they withdrew their offer to be a host community for the nuclear waste disposal site soon after their mayor submitted his resignation in the local opposition’s face.

The administration of Abe made decisions in December that the Japanese government will resort to identifying areas that are scientifically suitable for the storage of high-level radioactive waste.

They are eyeing on communities which are seemingly safe from all of the effects of volcanic and seismic activities of underground water.

After that, they are planning to approach the qualifying municipalities in the areas tested for research as potential candidates for the nuclear waste storage sites.

This is their move rather than having to wait for certain municipalities to come forward and volunteer their area.

Perspectives On Japan’s Nuclear Power

The generation of nuclear power of Japan has usually been compared to a “condominium without a toilet” because of the lack of final disposal sites for nuclear waste, while more fuel gets consumed in the generation of power at nuclear plants.

The said issue is mentioned by a lot of critics as one of the reasons for the disagreement with the use of nuclear power.

The administration of Abe is apparently hoping for the acceleration and progress of the process regarding the selection of disposal sites.

This is in accordance to Abe’s hopes of maintaining nuclear energy as Japan’s main energy source.

Government Compensation For Victims Of Minamata Disease?

The officials from the Imperial Household Agency informed Ogata that the visit of Japan’s imperial couple will not be an opportunity for them to hear about the suffering and hardships which were experienced by the patients. After all, there are hundreds of citizens who still hope for certification as victims of the Minamata disease since it entitles them for compensation directly from the Japanese government.

Masami Ogata, 55 years old and head of “kataribe” or storytellers group, says that the Minamata disease has not come yet to an end until today. Ogata believes that Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko wanted to remember that the victims still exist.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are also set to present followers at the sanitarium of Kikuchi Keifuen on October 26. The Kikuchi Keifuen is a place wherein 1,288 remains of leprosy patients can be found. The purpose why the government of Japan isolates the leprosy patients is the fact that they do not want the disease to spread further. Even their connection to their family members was also severed and some remains were not claimed to be buried in the family graves. The acting head of the Kikuchi Keifuen residents association will be the one to welcome the imperial couple of Japan during their visit to the place.

A Japanese Tradition

Japanese officials have already released their response and said that the dolphin killings were a “tradition” in Japan.

On the other hand, people are saying that the dolphin hunt series started in 1969. This just makes it less traditional compared to the existence of the Rolling Stones.

As the Japanese officials continued, they said that the dolphin killings have no difference from the hunting of animals to get food which appeal more to the tastes of the Westerners.

But just like the tradition’s cloak, it appears that animal butchery to acquire food conceals a truth that is less pleasing.

The Killers’ Earnings

Locally, the dolphins sold alive generate so many tens of thousands of dollars from each.

If the earnings of the hunters from the selling of 52 dolphins in captivity are conservatively estimated, the total might just reach three million dollars.

The dolphins, which are slaughtered for their meat, bring some few hundred dollars from each head.

Thus, the 41 dolphins which were killed on Tuesday may have given their killers somewhere lower than 20,000 dollars.

According to reports from The New York Times, the meat coming from dolphins is barely an important source of food.

Only a few people of Japan eat whale meat and the case is even rarer for dolphin meat.

Dolphin Killings Continue

On Friday, a new group of dolphins was driven and led into the cove where all the killings happened.

It was only last weekend when the world witnessed the activity in shock, while more than 200 dolphins waited for what would happen to them in the killing cove.

Fifty-two dolphins have been up for the selection of representatives coming from swim-with-dolphins programs and marine parks.

The first one was an albino calf which is estimated to have a worth of 500,000 dollars.

Tuesday Killings

Right after four terrible days, the killing started on Tuesday morning.

There were 41 dolphins that were killed, while the members of the families where they belonged to were soaked in their blood.

The dolphins, which can be seen as not suitable to enter the industry of entertainment or not that heavy to take meat from, were brought back to the waters.

A lot of them, especially those ones which were very young and were separated from their guardians that were killed, were no longer expected to overcome the trauma.

The season of dolphin killings will continue up to early March.

The Imperial Couple To Visit People Affected By Mercury Poisoning And Leprosy

Japan’s imperial couple is prepared to visit the well known site in Japan, the Minamata Disease Municipal Museum. The couple is scheduled to visit the museum on October 27 so that they will hear the experiences of those people who were affected by the worst happening of mercury poisoning. The couple will first have to visit the Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture particularly in the National Sanitarium Kikuchi Keifuen wherein they will talk to the patients with leprosy. These patients are those who were forced to live a life in isolation following the government program in the past though the program is now considered unconstitutional.

Some Japanese can still recall the happenings in their country when the Chisso Corporation, a factory situated in Minamata, discharged wastewater into the sea. That wastewater is said to contain methyl mercury. People who ate the marine products that came from the area that is contaminated complained their experiences such impaired eyesight, motion disorders and numbness in their body.

The Beauty of Symbol Tattoo

Kana is another type of Japanese character that may be used in a tattoo art. While others still prefer putting tribal tattoos, the use of Kana in a Japanese tattoo is also appealing. Most would even say that it is exotic and beautiful like you are capturing an ideogram in a simple stroke. This is often used to express feelings of freedom, hope and love through a tattoo. These arts are most often associated with movies especially if it is martial art related. It is because more manly men are attracted to this type of designs in a tattoo.

There are female in today’s generation who would also love to experience putting a tattoo artist in their body. If you also want to, you can try a Japanese tattoo art that is not permanent so it will just be erased after few weeks.
