I get the impression that most people put a lot of attention to the director of movies, but mostly just care about the studio for TV series. But both series and movies have directors and studios, so why the difference? Or, is my impression wrong?

I know with a lot of movies, the director is also the main creator of the story, while most series are adaptations of something, so that does put more creative requirement on the director. I guess we don't care as much about the director of movie adaptations, like for some arcs of Demon Slayer. Is that it?

There’s definitely a bit of a double standard when it comes to anime movies versus TV series. For movies, it’s all about the star director—think of legends like Hayao Miyazaki or Mamoru Hosoda. Fans say their vision and style are what make their films iconic and memorable. It's like knowing who designed the dresses of your favorite actresses for the Oscar's.

But for TV series, the same people look at the studio because the production are more collaborative, and based on the studio's popularity, create a different levels of hypes.
If you see names like madhouse, Bones or Kyoto Animation, you know you're in for a treat. It’s like trusting a high-end fashion house—reliable, consistent and chic.

So yes, both movies and series have directors and studios, but the focus shifts depending on the medium. It's all part of the glitzy world of anime.

You could be on to something. I though about all the series famous for their directors, and they're all original works such as Gundam and Evangelion.

Since you mentioned ufotable, I will say that Heaven's Feel is an impressive series of movies. Anyone eager for the industry's next hit should keep an eye on Tomonori Sudou.

I also don't know many TV directors. It's the same for me when it comes to live-action movies and series from the US.

I have this impression that TV shows are more "factory-produced" than movies are, and TV show production is much more of a collaborative process with serious time and resource constraints. Movies are supposedly a more creative-driven process, led by a strong leader with a voice.

Not saying that this is true, but I suspect that's how most people think as well.

And this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, where the studios and the directors don't even bother shining a spotlight on the actual people making these shows, so the audience is forever kept in the dark (outside of a handful of superfans).

Directors of anime originals are famous
Hideaki Anno? Yokohashi Tomino? Chiaki J Konaka? It's just that directing an adaptation is way less impressive most of a time than working on an original story so most people care for the mangakas of adaptation and there are more popular anime original movies than anime nowadays

I reckon lots of people also care a lot about the director of series, not just the studio, and due to higher engagement with series they tend to associate them with brands to a higher degree.

No, this isn't my signature~desu.
