The Imperial Couple To Visit People Affected By Mercury Poisoning And Leprosy

Japan’s imperial couple is prepared to visit the well known site in Japan, the Minamata Disease Municipal Museum. The couple is scheduled to visit the museum on October 27 so that they will hear the experiences of those people who were affected by the worst happening of mercury poisoning. The couple will first have to visit the Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture particularly in the National Sanitarium Kikuchi Keifuen wherein they will talk to the patients with leprosy. These patients are those who were forced to live a life in isolation following the government program in the past though the program is now considered unconstitutional.

Some Japanese can still recall the happenings in their country when the Chisso Corporation, a factory situated in Minamata, discharged wastewater into the sea. That wastewater is said to contain methyl mercury. People who ate the marine products that came from the area that is contaminated complained their experiences such impaired eyesight, motion disorders and numbness in their body.
